What is Moissanite? Moissanite is a rare and naturally occurring mineral composed of silicon carbide (SiC). It was first discovered in 1893 by the French chemist Henri Moissan, who initially mistook it for a diamond because of its brilliant appearance. Moissanite is not a naturally occurring gemstone and is commonly found in some types of meteorites and in small amounts in some mineral deposits. Moissanite has become popular as a substitute for diamond in jewelry because of its remarkable optical properties. It has a high index of refraction and dispersion, which means it has the same brilliant, fiery luster as a diamond.
